What is the Russell Group of universities?

The Russell Group is a collection of 24 leading UK universities that are known for their world-class research, academic excellence, and strong links to industry.

These universities are often at the forefront of innovation and play a key role in shaping global knowledge and policy. Together, they:

  • produce more than two-thirds of the UK’s world-leading research
  • offer a wide range of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • have outstanding teaching, facilities, and student support services.

Newcastle University is proud to be one of these institutions, offering a global learning environment in the heart of one of the UK’s most welcoming and affordable cities.

Is it like the Ivy League?

Yes, the Russell Group is often compared to the Ivy League in the United States. You might consider it to be the UK equivalent, with the top-ranked universities in the world usually a blend of Ivy League and Russell Group institutions.

Both are groups of prestigious universities known for their:

  • academic rigour
  • strong graduate outcomes
  • influential and innovative research
  • global reputation.

However, while the Ivy League is a private club of just eight US universities, the Russell Group includes 24 UK universities, most of which are public and more accessible in terms of tuition and entry routes.

Choosing a Russell Group university gives your child access to a high standard of education recognised around the world, without the high costs often associated with Ivy League schools.

Your child will benefit from personal tutoring, mentoring opportunities, mental health and wellbeing support, and help with everything from visas to accommodation.

How will a Russell Group university advance my child’s career prospects?

One of the main reasons families choose a Russell Group university is the strong return on investment. In the medical field alone, 75% of the UK’s doctors and dentists are trained at a Russell Group university.

They are seen as institutions that deliver outstanding education, uphold rigorous academic standards, and lead in cutting-edge research.

Russell Group universities have strong relationships with industries, offering:

  • guest lectures from industry experts
  • work placements and internships
  • graduate schemes and networking opportunities

Courses are often designed in partnership with employers to ensure students develop the skills that are most in demand. This includes digital skills, leadership, global awareness, and the ability to work across disciplines.

Graduating from a Russell Group university can give students a strong advantage in the job market -particularly in competitive sectors, where employers often associate these institutions with academic excellence and well-prepared graduates.

Are they a more expensive investment than other universities?

Tuition fees for undergraduate international students at Russell Group universities typically range from £20,000 to £30,000 per year, depending on the course.

This is in line with other top-tier universities in the UK. It’s also significantly more affordable than most Ivy League or top US private universities, where fees can exceed £50,000 per year.

Financial support is also available. Many Russell Group universities, including Newcastle, offer:

  • scholarships and bursaries for international students
  • financial aid based on academic performance or financial need
  • support with budgeting and living costs

Newcastle is also one of the most affordable UK cities to live in as a student. Compared to London the cost of rent in Newcastle is 66.7% cheaper on average.

Is it worth it?

When choosing a university, it’s natural to think about cost - but it’s just as important to consider value.
