There's a lot to think about when it comes to choosing a university, from finding the right course to choosing a city where you'll feel at home.

In this blog, we've listed just five of the many reasons you might want to choose Newcastle University...

Contents:

  1. Newcastle University is among the highest-ranking universities in the world
  2. Newcastle is among the most affordable, student-friendly cities in the UK
  3. We're five star
  4. You'll build your future with us
  5. Our priority is your health and wellbeing

Newcastle University is among the highest-ranking universities in the world

Newcastle University ranks in the top 130 universities in the world (QS World University Rankings 2025) not to mention we’re a founding member of the Russell Group - the UK's prestigious group of 24 world-class, research-intensive universities.

We're also a Global top 170 university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.

Our research is world-leading, so you'll learn from gifted educators and academics who are trailblazers in their respective fields. Whatever your passion, you'll be paired with like-minded students and academics who share your interests and will challenge you to delve deeper.

Newcastle is among the most affordable, student-friendly cities in the UK

Newcastle ranks in the top 10 most affordable cities in the UK in the QS Best Student Cities 2025. It's also 5th in the UK for student life (QS Best Student Cities 2025).

Our city offers a rich mix of history, sports, local music and a multicultural arts and literature scene. If none of that takes your fancy, few can resist the allure of Newcastle's nightlife - all within walking distance of our city-centre campus.

We're five star

Our teaching is ranked five-star (QS Stars 2024) and you’ll be guided to become an independent critical thinker.

You’ll learn through:

  • lectures and seminars
  • practical sessions
  • group learning
  • self-study
  • research
  • fieldwork and field visits

You’ll also get plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice – through presentations and exhibitions, performance opportunities, projects, placements and more.

During your first year, a peer mentor will help you settle into life as a university student and you'll be supported in your studies by a personal tutor. Your tutor is usually a member of academic staff from your degree programme who can advise on academic matters, as well as direct you to any wellbeing support you may need.

Our facilities are five-star, too (QS Stars 2024). You'll have access to specialist subject facilities ranging from a sea-going research vessel and marine lab, to high-specification labs and clinical skills suites, two commercial farms, music and media studios, plus much, much more as we continue to invest millions in an outstanding campus environment.

An on-campus museum, theatre and gallery bring history and art to life; our library service is multi-award-winning; and our partnership with the £350 million innovation district, Newcastle Helix - a living laboratory and global centre for science, technology, research and education in the heart of our city - will enhance your learning experience.
