How to choose student accommodation
Take time to explore your options to find the right accommodation for you.
Attend an Open Day and join an accommodation tour. Search university websites for virtual tours or join online events to get more information.
Make a list of what matters most to you: price, shared living, or having your own bathroom. Knowing your priorities will help narrow your search.
Student accommodation at Newcastle:
At Newcastle you’re spoilt for choice with great quality accommodation that’s either University owned or run by trusted private partners.
Our residences offer modern spaces with everything you need, plus shared areas to relax and meet people.
Grouped into self-catering flats, nearly 90% of our rooms have private en suite facilities. Some studios and family accommodation are also available.
How to decide where to live
It’s not just about the room – location matters too.
Living on campus means you’re close to lectures and facilities, with no commute. Off-campus options can offer more independence and quieter surroundings while still keeping you connected.
Student accommodation at Newcastle:
You get the best of both worlds at Newcastle. Our accommodation is either on campus in the city centre, or just a short walk/public transport ride away.
Wherever you live, you’re never far from lectures, shops, or places to hang out.

How much does student accommodation cost?
Costs vary depending on the residence and room type. More privacy and extra facilities – such as your own bathroom, a gym, games room and car parking – usually mean higher costs.
Always check university websites for the latest prices.

Find out how much it costs to live with us in the descriptions of each of our residences. Please note, the cost of utilities isn’t included in our family/couple accommodation.
How long are student accommodation contracts
Contracts are fixed-term and explain what’s included (such as utilities and facilities) as well as your responsibilities, and rules on payments and cancellations. Always read them carefully before signing.
Student accommodation at Newcastle:
Our undergraduate accommodation contracts last for 40 weeks (September to June). This covers holidays so, you can leave your stuff in your room when you go back home.
If you’re a postgraduate student, contracts are usually around 50 weeks.
If you want to stay in Newcastle over the summer, you can apply for an extension, but spaces are limited.
When to apply for student accommodation
You’ll typically apply after you’ve received an offer from a university. You might also have to make that institution your firm choice on your UCAS application.

How to apply for student accommodation
Applications are made online. You may be asked to list your favourite 3-5 residences, so have a few back-ups in case your choices fill up.
Your choices will be reviewed and you’ll be sent an accommodation offer – it mightn’t be your first choice. If you’re happy with your room, you accept it online.
Student accommodation at Newcastle:
If you’re an undergraduate student and have made us your firm choice, you’ll use our Advanced Booking system. You’ll log in to our portal and reserve your own room from the options available. That way you know your room type and residence.
You'll find out your exact flat and room number in your contract, which you’ll get after Results Day. You’ll have 24 hours to accept.
If you’re applying for accommodation AFTER Results Day, the process is the same. Because our portal shows real-time availability, you can select your room with confidence.
If you’re a postgraduate student and are holding a firm offer from us, you’ll apply via our portal, telling us your top accommodation choices. We’ll then match these with vacant rooms.
Information about how to apply for accommodation is regularly updated on our website, according to the year of study.
