Scabies is a common health condition caused by tiny mites. Recent media reports suggest that the number of diagnosed cases of scabies in England has gone up by nearly three quarters compared with last year. It can affect anyone and spreads through physical contact or sharing bedding. Symptoms usually include a rash, which can feel uncomfortable, particularly at night. If left untreated, it can develop into a range of nasty skin problems but effective treatments are available and relief often starts within a few days.
The Public Health Department at Newcastle City Council has prepared an information video where you can find out more. If you or someone you know thinks they might have scabies visit your local pharmacy and they’ll be able to help.
