Newcastle University has awarded honorary degrees to five inspirational figures who’ve made a real difference in the local and national community - from food to finance.
Among them is Huffty McHugh, a lifelong activist for women, girls, and LGBTQ+ communities in the North East. Huffty has spent over 40 years leading change at the West End Women and Girls Centre and is no stranger to breaking barriers - she was the first openly gay woman on UK TV in the 1990s.
Another broadcaster honoured this year is Professor David Olusoga OBE. A proud Geordie, David’s work explores race, identity and British history, bringing often complex stories to a wide audience.
Their achievements show the power of local voices in driving national change.
Filming for a new Channel 4 documentary series is now underway across Newcastle city centre and will continue over the next 12 weeks. This includes locations on our campus, so you may see camera crews around.
The series focuses on the work of Northumbria Police and is being made with support from the University. You have the right to object to being filmed or withdraw consent at any time.
