Due to high demand, the Research Culture team has added extra retreat dates to the 2026 Research Retreat series, running until July 2026.
If you have an upcoming deadline or an important task that keeps sliding down the to-do list, a Research Retreat offers dedicated time and a quiet, supportive space to focus away from day‑to‑day distractions.
Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find more information on the Research Retreat SharePoint pages. New retreat registrations will not impact existing bookings or waiting lists.
The Research Culture Team is hosting its first Research Retreat Takeover, bringing as many people as possible together in one space to dedicate time to writing and research‑related work.
Multiple rooms across the Stephenson Building will be available, including facilitated full‑day retreats and smaller rooms for collaborative group work. The day will also include light refreshments, networking opportunities and a guided walk around Exhibition Park.
You can register individually or on behalf of a small group (up to 10). When signing up, you’ll be asked what you plan to work on so participants can be grouped by 'themes' where possible.
Led by PhD researchers Phoebe Lewis and Ainsley Hatt, in collaboration with Peter Moore Fuller (infohackit), this project encouraged students to move beyond traditional academic formats and use bold, visual storytelling to communicate their research to a wider public audience.
Through a series of creative workshops using Affinity by Canva, participants transformed complex data into striking illustrated artworks, exhibited at the Great North Museum: Hancock, from now until 17 January 2027.
The exhibition also highlighted the diverse, often unexpected journeys into academia, inviting visitors to imagine that “someone like them” could be part of it too. The project offered a powerful reminder that research doesn’t just belong in journals – it can be shared, seen and understood in ways that connect with everyone.
This project was supported by Newcastle University, the Doctoral College, Affinity by Canva, the Great North Museum: Hancock and the British Ecological Society.
