In this edition, we share welcome messages from Professor Matthew Grenby, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation and from Linming, your new Postgraduate Officer in the Students’ Union.

He also discusses changes to the Annual Progress Review process and highlights the EDI Toolkit, a fantastic resource filled with best practices for equality, diversity, and inclusion for researchers at every level.

The PGR Community Hub is back for the 24/25 academic year with even more events to help you connect with peers, share insights and make progress on your dissertation or research project! 

 

We host monthly in-person and online events, including: 

  • Accountability Groups 
  • Practice Sharing Groups
  • Writers’ Groups
  • Discussion Groups
  • Presentation Practice Groups 

The PGR Community Hub is a space run by PGRs for PGRs. Our events are open to all PGRs from all faculties and at all stages, so come along and join your PGR Community!

💡 Researcher training from the Library

If you recently joined the University, you’ll probably meet your Liaison Librarian or tutors from the Academic Skills Team over the next few weeks as part of your Faculty induction. Teams from the Library deliver training as part of the PGR training programmes offered in all three Faculties.  

 

We cover a huge range of topics including literature searching, systematic reviews, managing information, writing literature reviews, collaborating with other researchers, creating a data management plan, disseminating your work and becoming an open researcher.

🏆 ‘Three Minute Thesis’ (3MT®) – The 2024 Winners

Jo Baker from the School of Education, Communication, and Language Sciences won the 2024 Newcastle University ‘Three Minute Thesis’ (3MT®) competition with her presentation, ‘Elsa, the tiger and the Speech Sound Disorder.’ After winning the North East regional competition, she is now a UK finalist hosted by Vitae on Wednesday 2 October 2024. 

 

The 3MT® competition challenges researchers to present their work in three minutes using one slide. Jo's success highlights Newcastle’s postgraduate research talent. Why not consider submitting your own presentation next year?

📷 'Picture This' exhibition

Developed and curated by PGR students Ainsley Hatt and Phoebe Lewis, the 'Picture This' exhibition showcased postgraduate research through engaging artwork that simplifies complex topics. Funded by the Doctoral College, 15 students participated in workshops, culminating in a successful exhibition hosted at the Dove Marine Laboratory during the Cullercoats Festival, attracting over 1,100 visitors.
