Need to talk to someone? Find out about the support available to you.
Hi ,
With upcoming deadlines and an ever-increasing to do list, we understand that university life can be busy and sometimes may feel a little overwhelming. A full schedule can make it challenging to prioritise our wellbeing needs, but we all need to find ways to recharge that work for us. Having access to a dedicated support network is vital.
At Newcastle University, you have access to several sources of support that can help you academically, personally and when you start to think about your future after university. We want you to know how you can access this support so that you can look after your wellbeing whilst progressing and achieving your goals.
Your Personal Tutor
Your Personal Tutor is here to support you throughout your studies. They are dedicated to looking after your interests and should be your first point of contact for any academic questions, whether it’s about choosing modules or discussing your progress. If you encounter any difficulties that affect your studies, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Personal Tutor. They are here to listen and can guide you to the right resources and support.
If you have not yet met your Personal Tutor or don’t know who they are, visit the Student Portal and check the ‘My Programmes’ tile. If no information is displayed, please contact your School.
Your Student Wellbeing Adviser
Student Wellbeing Advisers are located within Schools. They will ensure you have all the information you need about university based mental wellbeing support services.
They can advise on ways to improve and maintain your mental health and offer guidance on wellbeing and disability support.
The Student Wellbeing Adviser for the School of Modern Languages is Sarah. You can contact them via SMLwellbeing@newcastle.ac.uk to book an appointment or discuss any wellbeing difficulties you may be experiencing. Sarah can then help you explore your best next steps in accessing appropriate support.
As you start to think of life beyond University, you may find it helpful to meet with a Careers Consultant or one of our other careers professionals who can help you make informed choices about your future career plans.
If you’re unsure what to do after your degree, they can explore your options with you, as well as help with applications and postgraduate personal statements.
They can also provide impartial guidance if you're thinking of changing or leaving your course.
You can book an in-person or online appointment via your My Career account - new appointments are added each day.
Canvas Resources
In addition to helping you achieve your academic goals, we are committed to ensuring you have the support you need to make important lifestyle choices. The Newcastle University Induction is designed to make your university experience as enriching and enjoyable as possible. We want you to feel confident in understanding your responsibilities, staying safe, and knowing how to access support whenever you need it.
If you haven’t already, we encourage you to read, engage with and mark as ‘done’ all the essential elements of the course, which cover:
Please ensure that you have registered with a local doctor/GP. You can do this by visiting the Student GP Registration website and taking ten minutes to complete all the relevant information. If you have any questions regarding the registration process, please contact our colleagues at Involve North East by emailing beinvolved@involvene.org.uk with your query.
After registering with a GP, you can also download the NHS app which can help you book appointments (if supported by your GP surgery) and give you instant access to your NHS health record.
Please be aware that for some healthcare queries, you do not need to book an appointment with your GP and can seek help from your local pharmacy. Find out about the health conditions pharmacists can treat.
Other useful support services
Our recent Welcome Survey revealed that many students were either unaware of the support services available at the University or knew about them but were unsure how to access them.
