Professional Programmes

The Newcastle Research and Innovation Institute (NewRIIS) is based at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability at East Jurong.

It offers more than 1000 square meters of exceptional teaching and research space including computer laboratories, a visualization suite, seminar rooms, open-plan research areas and study booths.

A wide range of events and activities are organised at NewRIIS. Newcastle University postgraduate qualifications are taught here. We also have Professional Programmes running throughout the year, which are taught by our academic staff and guest lecturers. The laboratories at NewRIIS are used by staff for their research.

The Professional Programmes provide recent graduates and working professionals the opportunity to refresh and update their professional and technical skills. They may be recognised, and in some cases subsidised by, professional bodies such as the Maritime and Port Authority and the Professional Engineers Board.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamentals of available sources of renewable energy and give details of its conversion into electricity. Students will gain an overview of the engineering challenges of renewable energy production and a wider understanding of renewable energy in a societal context. The leading technologies in the field will be examined in detail, with a focus on electrical machine requirements.

1. To introduce students to the role and regulations and their impact on vessel design, construction and operation: safety and environment. To examine the role of IMO and classification societies and their relationship with the national and international regulatory bodies.

2. To familiarise students with the work and responsibilities of the marine surveyor, and in particular the procedures employed in structural and machinery surveys of ships and offshore installations.

To give students an appreciation of the drivers, technologies and techniques behind the management of energy. In addition to give practical experience in energy auditing, including monitoring and targeting, enabling them to identify energy efficiency opportunities.

This module gives a systematic and comprehensive overview of why we should manage the energy we use, looking at political, environmental and fiscal issues. It then goes on to give the students the tools and techniques necessary to actively manage energy in their workplace.

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses Machine Learning methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from many structured and unstructured data. In the past decade, data analytics using machine learning has given us numerous ideas for optimisation in areas like manufacturing process, performance, quality assurance, and defect tracking, predictive and conditional maintenance, demand and throughput forecasting, automation control and energy sustainability.

Machine learning is so pervasive today that you probably use it dozens of times a day without knowing it. It involves the process of developing a model to find and learn the patterns embedded within a given big dataset and distinguish relevance from the irrelevant events. Such a process will require both statistical modelling and probabilistic reasoning approaches to be successful.

This module aims to provide a broad introduction to machine learning, data mining, and statistical pattern recognition technique to analyse information obtained from sensors such as images, sequential and categorical data.
