Lauren PeachWhy did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

The course had everything I was looking for from my degree. It contained modules I was interested in, as well as containing a nice mix of lectures and fieldwork. The course covered a wide range of topics within Zoology without being too narrowly focused on one thing. This was perfect for me as I was not sure which direction I wanted to take my career in afterwards, so it gave me a solid foundation. Due to already having family in Newcastle, I knew I liked the city so it seemed the perfect place for me to go and study.

What did you love most about your time at Newcastle University?

I really liked that I always felt supported on my course and was able to develop my own interests within my degree. There was always plenty to get involved with socially within my course, through sports and also through other societies. This meant I was able to keep a nice balance of work and a social life no matter what I was interested in doing, meaning I graduated having had a well-rounded experience.

What did you enjoy most about Newcastle as a city and your time at Newcastle University?

Newcastle's location really could not be any better. The city is compact and easy to get around but has the perfect mix of culture, nightlife and shopping. It is also very easy to get out of the city into the surrounding countryside or to the coast, so there really is something for everyone and every mood. Being able to relax and have fun with my friends doing a variety of things without having to travel far, I think really helped me make the most that Newcastle has to offer.

How do you feel your degree has helped you to get to where you are today?

Being able to take part in fieldwork and also practice my presentation skills gave me strengths in areas outside the obvious knowledge I would obtain from a Zoology degree. It helped build my confidence in interacting with others outside of a classroom setting and build my independent thinking skills. This allowed me to take up other opportunities which eventually led to my employment as on Ocean Conservationist on board cruise ships; I deliver lectures on whales and dolphins and help them spot them from the ship, whilst collecting scientific data on whale and dolphin distribution. Without the skills that I began to develop on my degree, it would have been a much slower process in getting where I am today.

What do you enjoy most about your current role?

I really enjoy that I am able to share my passion and enthusiasm for the marine environment with members of the public, whilst working with like-minded individuals. I get to travel to amazing places and see things I never thought I would be able to see. It is hard work, the hours are long and it can be physically demanding, But at the moment I would not trade it for anything else.

What piece of advice would you give to students interested in pursuing a similar career?

Experience outside of your degree can be just as beneficial if not more important than what you will actually study. Take the time to find ways in which you can practice your skills, perhaps through volunteering at events or even remotely online. For anyone wanting work in marine conservation, jobs are very competitive so showing that additional dedication on your CV gained through volunteering etc., can really help you stand out from the crowd.
