EvieWhy did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

I chose Newcastle University because of the atmosphere & friendliness I experienced when visiting. Everyone I spoke to was kind and helpful – this hasn’t changed.

Another major factor was the flexibility offered by the School of Computing. When choosing my degree, I didn’t know what I wanted to do besides computing. Placement, specialism, masters - all were a possibility, and I didn't know what I wanted to do. But these are all decisions you can change until the end of your second year.

Finally, the School of Computing/Computing Society (NUCATS) and Industry are very strong. In my second year, everyone completes a Team Project. For ours, we worked with an industry partner to help fulfil a European Space Agency contract.

Has Newcastle University lived up to your expectations?

Absolutely! Both the University and the city have been amazing, and I wouldn’t hesitate to make my choice again. There's always something to do, meaning it’s easy to get involved or meet new people. Newcastle's nightlife is unbeaten. If drinking isn’t your thing, there are plenty of hidden coffee shops & activities around the city. (Fun fact, Newcastle has the only dog café in England! If dogs aren’t your thing, we also have not only one, but two, cat cafés!)

What has most impressed you about the University?

The Students’ Union has an incredible range of societies, sports, and support available. Some of my highlights at university have been with societies. Some examples include holidays run by the 20Minute society and events I’ve helped run with NUCATS (Computing & Technology society). I've also some of my close friends via societies.

How supportive are academic staff on your degree programme?

The staff in the School of Computing have been amazing. Whenever there’s been an issue, there’s always been someone I’ve felt comfortable talking to that's keen to help. Lecturers are incredibly friendly, too. They’ll normally stick around at the end of the lecture to answer any questions. Don’t be afraid to get in touch and ask if you need to.

What has been your favourite experience at Newcastle?

It’s hard to name one. Newcastle is in a brilliant location. The coast is 20 minutes away via Metro, Northumberland National Park & Kielder are 60 minutes away, and Edinburgh is 90 minutes by train (I’d recommend the Christmas markets there).

The Great North Run is the World's largest Half Marathon, taking place in Newcastle each year. Running this for charity is one of the best things I’ve done in Newcastle to date. We also have great cycling infrastructure meaning there are plenty of sights to see via bike.

Getting involved in running a society has also been one of my favourites. It has been super rewarding to get involved and run events. One of my favourites was our 24-hour gameathon where we raised over £1,000 for charity.

What advice would you give to your younger self about university life?

Don’t be afraid to get stuck in! Although it can be daunting, my closest friends and highlights have come from getting involved with various activities. It sounds cliché, but you do get out what you put in.
