Newcastle University Community Combats Covid-19 #WeAreNCL

By Newcastle University

We're so proud of the many ways our student and staff community has been coming together, stepping up and showing support for one another over the past couple of weeks.

Joining the National Effort

1 - qpcr

Our Medical School joined the national effort to fight Covid-19 and save lives by lending the NHS seven of our qPCR machines. They're going to be used to help process 1000s of samples from people suspected of having the virus. The Royal Navy were on campus to pick them up!

Volunteering with Public Health England

2 - public health england

Over 600 student and staff volunteers have signed up so far to help the Covid-19 screening with Public Health England. The first volunteers are already at the front line.

Medical Students Step Up

3 - med students

Our medical students are doing all they can and giving NHS staff a helping hand during the Covid-19 outbreak. Including setting up the North East group of ‘Medical Students Helping Hands’ – a national initiative to give practical help with childcare, assist with shopping, and in some cases animal care, for health workers.

Supporting our NHS

4 - nhs support

As the number of University staff on campus has reduced significantly this week, we’ve been able to offer our campus car parks to NHS staff working in the RVI, reducing the need for them to travel by public transport or pay for parking.

Additionally, the Co-op in our Students’ Union has introduced a special shopping hour for NHS staff and student volunteers helping out at the RVI.

NUMES Give Back

5 - numes

Last week, our Mechanical Engineering Society collected non-perishable items from departing students to donate to Newcastle West End Foodbank.

Reducing Anxiety with Autistica

6 - med students6 - autism

Uncertain times can be a major cause of anxiety, especially for autistic people. Working with UK autism research charity Autistica, our experts have helped to develop a guide to assist with the management of uncertainty for those with autism.

Students’ Union Initiatives

7 - nusu

Our Students’ Union Sabbatical Officers have created a Facebook group for all students to share positivity, ideas, well-being tips and support for one another.

Whilst NUSU Go Volunteer have been sharing volunteering ideas you can take part in from home.

Supporting our Campus Community

8 - staff

At this difficult time, we just wanted to say an enormous thank you to all of our fantastic colleagues who have been, and continue to, work hard to support our campus community. We could not be prouder of our Campus Security, Cleaning, Grounds, IT, Accommodation, Maintenance and technical colleagues, and everyone giving their all to keep our University running and our people safe.

Raising and Giving

9 - rag

Before the country locked down, our Students’ Union Raising and Giving Society were busy volunteering with FareShare North East, an organisation that gives surplus food from supermarkets to those in the community who need it most, helping sort and pack up items for those in need.

Offering a City Lifeline

91 - city life

Our researchers at Open Lab and the Urban Observatory have been working with Newcastle Council on CityLife Line. The brand-new service harnesses the outpouring of goodwill from residents in Newcastle, allowing people to sign up as a volunteer or register their need for assistance during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Urban Observatory have also been measuring social distancing and sharing their insights with real-time data on pedestrian footfall, vehicle movements and car parking. Highlighting how people are changing their daily routines whilst working from home or self-isolating.

Selfless Staff Sign-Up

92 - volunteer

We’ve set up a staff volunteering register to help link volunteers to those most in need.

Our list of ideas for how our selfless volunteers can help is constantly growing. If you have more to add, let us know at covid19enquiries@ncl.ac.uk

Plus, over the past few weeks Parliament has seen a surge in need for access to research expertise as it engages with the COVID-19 outbreak. We’re encouraging our academics with relevant research expertise to sign up for a COVID-19 Outbreak Expert Database.

A big thank you to all staff, students, future students and alumni for everything they've contributed at this difficult time. We’re a strong community bursting with exceptional, talented and compassionate people, and we’ll get through this together. #WeAreNCL
