11 Unmissable Vegan Spots in Newcastle

by Newcastle University

Happy Veganuary! To celebrate we’ve put together some of our favourite places to grab a plant-based bite to eat around town…

Soul Shack

100% vegan 100% of the time and just steps from Monument in the stylish Stack shipping container village.

Soul Shack offers an array of finger-licking vegan fare, including the tastiest ‘Southern Fried Fricken’ you’re likely to find. Growing in popularity with its 100% vegan menu, don’t miss out on sampling Soul Shack’s deliciously ethical comfort food.

Humpit – The Hummus and Pita Bar

Situated in our very own Students’ Union, it’s never been easier to grab a healthy, heavenly hummus and falafel pitta between lectures at Humpit. Over 1 million hummus lovers can’t be wrong!

**Closed until further notice**

Watch this space for Humpit’s reopening in 2020! In the meantime, enjoy vegan options at Shijo, Subway, Baby Mac’s or Co-op, all within the Students’ Union building.

Tea Sutra

Tea Sutra claims to be ‘An island of calm floating above the bustle of the city of Newcastle’ and we couldn’t agree more.

If exploring exotic infusions in an ornate setting is your cup of tea, then you’ll be in your element with over 100 varieties to taste. Not to mention their flavourful vegan menu and celebrated selection of cakes!

Super Natural Cafe

Another animal-friendly lunch-time favourite, Super Natural serves an array of well-seasoned wraps, paninis and baked potatoes, alongside delectable daily specials.

Plus, venture along on select evenings to settle down with an almond milk hot chocolate and enjoy live music from local artists in this cosy cafe, complete with twinkling fairy lights.

Grumpy Panda, Gateshead

If you’re seeking a herbivore hangout that’s sure to impress your carnivore friends, Grumpy Panda is the perfect choice.

Laying claim to the title of the North East’s only American-style vegan diner, think burgers, ribs and shakes galore! Located over the river in Gateshead, it’s well worth the trip.

The Ship Inn

One of the oldest pubs in leafy Ouseburn, The Ship Inn offers one of the very best (if not THE best!) vegan Sunday Roasts in town.

Dine alfresco in the summer months and enjoy tip-top scran before walking it off with a stroll along the canal or around friendly Ouseburn Farm.

Kiln Workshop and Kitchen

Undoubtedly a dining experience like no other, Kiln Workshop & Kitchen delivers mouth-watering vegan options alongside a working pottery and ceramics workshop.

Marvel at the workshop’s latest carefully crafted creations as you tuck into a wholesome helping of their Dhun’s Chickpea stew.

Authentic Indian cuisine and an all-vegan menu.

Snackwallah is a must for anyone seeking freshly made, well-spiced, street food as you browse the stalls of Grainger Market.

Shoe Tree Cafe

Comfortable, cosy and relaxing. Shoe Tree Cafe, located in Heaton, serves up heavenly homemade vegan and vegetarian breakfasts, lunches and sweet treats.

Plus, an extensive selection of loose leaf tea and outstanding coffee!

Little Green Social

Drop in to Little Green Social – a friendly, family-run cafe, bar, health food shop and social space for all your nutritional and ethical needs.

Offering home-made, nourishing vegan foods as well as household goods, health foods, raw foods, ethical cosmetics, and even eco glitter!

There’s a new vegan sausage roll in town and it’s right here on campus! Just another tasty reason to drop in to The Grand (formerly Campus Coffee) on your way to class. Or, check out our brand new Frederick Douglass Cafe, serving up a different scrumptious vegan main every day.

Don’t forget, we’re expanding our dietary requirement options across all campus cafes and restaurants. If you get stuck, ask our staff for further information about choices available.
