AshliWhy did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

I chose Newcastle because when I first visited, I loved the city! Everyone is so friendly and it's beautiful. The university architecture is great and the university being high performing in league tables in general and for my course at the time was an added bonus.

Has Newcastle University lived up to your expectations?

I don’t fully remember my expectations, but I know I thought it would be fun and it certainly has been! Geordies are a fantastic bunch, and they certainly live up to their reputation. The staff who are local are the best. I expected university to be challenging and rewarding – it’s certainly been both.

What has most impressed you about the University?

Over my 5 years, I’ve seen student wellbeing and support services improve. More dedicated services and ease of access have certainly improved the student experience.

Kings Gate Careers Service. Having dedicated staff for my school has been great. They are thorough when checking CVs and covering letters, have lots of experience and resources to help in the job search. Easy to access both in person and online. I did a year in industry and the support provided to me and my colleagues who were also on placement year was great.

How supportive are academic staff on your degree programme?

Staff go above and beyond to aid your learning. Technicians have been my favourite people throughout my time here, are always up for a laugh. Their technical knowledge and understanding is incredible. When approached staff have been helpful and are willing to answer my questions.

What has been your favourite experience at Newcastle?

St. James Park! Going to watch a match is a must. Such a great atmosphere. Not being from a city - hearing roars across the city centre when someone scores is always enjoyable.

And second – Longsands beach (Tynemouth). I know it sounds silly, but I did not know how close Newcastle is to the beach before arriving. Just a short metro ride to see the beautiful North East Coast!

What advice would you give to your younger self about university life?

Get involved in societies. Try lots of new things and make the most of your free time – naps are great, but experiences are better!
