AnnaWhy did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

Newcastle University was neither my firm nor insurance choice on results day. However, as soon as I discovered that I had been placed in clearing, Newcastle University was my go-to choice. Truth be told, one of the main reason was due to it being a prestigious Russell Group university with lower entry requirements.

When I arrived in Newcastle, I quickly realising how welcoming and friendly people are up here and I felt right at home.

Has Newcastle University lived up to your expectations?

Ever since starting my journey at Newcastle University, I have always thought of Newcastle as a home away from home. Even though it’s a 6-hour drive away!

I have had amazing pastoral support from both my department and the university as a whole. Especially from the Careers Service, which was immensely helpful nearing graduation.

My academic and social journey has been impeccable and, more importantly, memorable. I still can’t believe that four years have passed since I first joined Newcastle University.

What has most impressed you about the University?

The thing that impressed me the most about Newcastle University is the diversity and inclusivity. Being from a Tamil (South Asian) background and having lived in London for majority of my life, I thought I would lose this sense of culture and belonging up in the North.

However, this was certainly not the case, in fact there are many South Asian societies and socials that have helped me find friends that I have been in touch with for years now.

I also feel the level and range of support services we have at Newcastle University is something that truly makes the university special from wellbeing, go abroad, learning needs and disability related services, visa support, finance support, academic support and many more which I had not expected.

How supportive are academic staff on your degree programme?

My degree had a relatively large cohort but was very well organized and delivered. During COVID, there were quite a few disruptions to the normal delivery of the programme. Having said that, any issues we had were easily communicated to both module leaders and our degree program director. They made sure everyone was well looked after. My personal tutor was also a gem during this time, and I still am in good contact with him.

What has been your favourite experience at Newcastle?

My favourite experience at Newcastle has been getting to know the locals and the place like I have been here for years. The feeling of home is simply unbeatable and that’s how I feel at Newcastle!

What advice would you give to your younger self about university life?

Regardless of what your dream university is or whether you get in or not, realistically you will have a great time at university as long as you’re surrounded by positive and supportive people. University life flies by, so get involved and make the most of it.

It will probably be both the most stressful and the most memorable times of your life!
